The Health Quality & Safety Commission works with clinicians, providers and consumers to improve health and disability support services.

Quality and safety improvements will mean fewer people harmed, more lives saved, and financial savings within the sector.

Our vision is hauora kounga mō te katoa, quality health for all. 

Our strategic priorities are:

  • improving experience for consumers and whānau
  • embedding and enacting Te Tiriti o Waitangi, supporting mana motuhake
  • achieving health equity
  • strengthening systems for high-quality services.

Our programme areas include advance care planning, adverse events, aged residential care, building leadership and capability, infection prevention and control, medication safety, mental health and addiction, trauma, patient deterioration, consumer engagement, primary care and mortality review.

What we do:

  • Monitor and report on quality and safety
  • Build sector capability for quality and safety improvement
  • Support clinicians to be leaders of quality and safety improvement and follow best practice
  • Build consumer engagement and partnership
  • Support reporting and management of health care incidents
  • Manage mortality review functions
  • Influence the health quality and safety agenda and be a catalyst for change
  • Ensure success in our programme areas.

We work towards achieving the New Zealand Triple Aim for Quality Improvement:

  • improved quality, safety and experience of care for people and their whānau | he whakapikinga kounga, haumarutanga, āhuatanga o te taurima hoki mō te tangata me tōna whānau
  • improved health and equity for all populations | te hauora me te whiwhinga ōrite pai ake mō ngā kāhui tangata katoa
